67th Republic Day of India

By: Kishore Dere

On 26th January 2016, India celebrated 67th Republic Day. In fact it was 66th anniversary of the First Republic Day that was celebrated on 26th January 1950. It is time not only for jubilation and celebration but introspection and correction as well. As far as novelty in celebration is concerned, this year there was a French Contingent in the Republic Day Parade. This was in consonance with the fact that the President of France, Francois Hollande was the Chief Gust. Another noteworthy attraction, as far as the parade was concerned, was that a contingent of dogs too participated in the parade. Those were of course highly trained ones along with their masters. Besides this, there was usual pomp and show. There was on display a large number of arms (and ammunition!). One really does not know what is the need to brag about having weapons (especially when there is almost national aversion to even think of using them for self-defence too!).

Despite all this show of strength, the fact remains that India is always vulnerable to terrorist attacks even at the slightest drop of a hat. Pathankot attack, hopefully has not yet vanished from the memories of dyed-in-wool liberals and ardent champions of unilateral  peace and tranquility. Thus, what are we going to do about this menace from within and without? It is time we not only debated and shouted form out rooftops but also took some meaningful and respectful action to prevent recurrence of such ominous events. Can it ever happen? Or is it hoping against hope? Would it be an act of intolerance if one were to protest against such acts of perfidy?

Moreover, this Republic Day anniversary joy was also marred by     suicide of one of our brightest science research scholars from the prestigious University of Hyderabad. Late Rohith Vemula had a big dream and an ambition of becoming a leading science writer like that of Carl Sagan. As Honourable Prime Minister, Narendra Modi rightly said, whatever might be the reason and politics  behind this  unfortunate incident, each one of us feels the pain of his noble parents. Let us pray the almighty God that his soul rests in peace.

Would this sad episode prompt us to forget the evil of caste and banish the monster of casteism from our minds lock, stock and barrel? Can our academic institutions be more sensitive in dealing with such thorny issues? Likewise can our bright young scholars also be expected to focus mainly on studies? Dr. B.R. Ambedkar who had faced even worse kind of discrimination far more valiantly had never given up. His motto was “educate, organise and agitate”. We in fact are doing the reverse of what he had said. Contemporary student leaders seem to begin and end with agitation only. Suicide is not at all an answer to any problem anywhere, anytime.

Let us hope that all of us learn our respective lessons from such sad events.

Adi Shankara Chair at Columbia University and ignorant Indian Funders of such Chairs

Read carefully this excerpt from the book ” The Battle for Sanskrit” by Rajivji Malhotra. It says:

“To appreciate why such chairs would undermine our tradition, the reader needs to understand the proposed terms of the Adi Shankara Chair at Columbia. Two committees were being formed to manage this chair. One was the Academic Committee, consisting of scholars from Columbia, to be headed by Sheldon Pollock. The second was the Donor and Advisor Committee, which would represent the various financiers and administrators of Sringeri Peetham. All the funding would come from the Donor and Advisor Committee. The selection of the scholar to occupy the chair would be made by the Academic Committee, which would have sole control over the selection, academic content and activities of the chair. The donors would have no veto right or say in the matter; they would merely be informed of the selection after it had been made.”

Now some comments:

  1. (Comment by Shreepal Singh) Pollock Sheldon is the American Orientalist who is propagating a thesis called “Neo-Hinduism”. This thesis propounds that there is no “unified Hinduism” worth the name that is discernable in Indian ancient Scriptures or sacred books. This theory says that “modern Hinduism as we see it today” is the artificial creation of Vivekananda etc.
  2. This thesis further propounds that Sanskrit as a language has been a “political tool of oppression of the low – common people (you read it as modern Dalits) – by the high priestly class”.
  3. That Sanskrit as a language has been a tool of “political oppression” but also a tool of “oppressing other Indian vernacular languages”.
  4. This gentleman – Pollock Sheldon – is a highly learned person with a sufficient knowledge of Sanskrit but has an agenda, which a neutral scholar would not have.
  5. There is need for Indian traditional scholars of Sanskrit to rebut his theory point by point with accurate reference of sacred books.
  6. Indian funders who are pumping their money to fund Chairs like this one at Columbia do not know – and need to know – this aspect. They feel bliss in their ignorance.
  7. (Comments by Surya K.) It is unbelievable that smart people agree to such a setup.  It is unfathomable that wealthy Indians are dropping guard and willing to blindly outsource the essential core.  It is even more unfathomable that Sringeri Peetham accepts advice from ANYONE to cede adhikara.(1) If there is one unimportant unwritten rule of smart business practices, it is not to trust and handover control to ANY external party no matter how aligned and trustworthy they appear.
  8. If there is one thing that you never want to cede control of, it is adhikara.  Adi Shankara Chair at Columbia University on behalf of Sringeri Peetham is tantamount to ceding adhikara to Columbia University.

Is government interference in Hindu Temples justified?

The Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowment Act of 1951 allows State Governments and politicians to take over thousands of Hindu Temples and maintain complete control over them and their properties.

It is claimed that they can sell the temple assets and properties and use the money in any way they choose.

A charge has been made not by any Temple authority, but by a foreign writer, Stephen Knapp in a book (Crimes Against India and the Need to Protect Ancient Vedic Tradition) published in the United States that makes shocking reading. See:

http://www.stephen-knapp.com/crimes_against_india.htm

Hundreds of temples in centuries past have been built in India by devout rulers and the donations given to them by devotees have been used for the benefit of the (other) people. If, presently, money collected has ever been misused (and that word needs to be defined), it is for the devotees to protest and not for any government to interfere.

This is what has been happening currently under an intrusive law.
There is a popular belief that since the temples are controlled by the government now, the funds can be used for any social purpose at least.

Please note that none of the devout kings who constructed these temples claimed any right over the temples. Many of them have not even left their names behind. Let alone not controlling the temples and their funds, these kings , in fact, consigned lands and other properties, including their jewels, to these temples. They only facilitated and did not claim any rights over these temples.

That is the only acceptable attitude.

None of the big temples (barring perhaps a handful) have been constructed by the governments of today and they have no right over any of these temples – funds, administration or over the way in which the worship is to be conducted.

The funds of these temples should be used only for the administration of these temples, their repairs, the emoluments, the infrastructure and facilities around these temples and the surplus for the upkeep of other less known temples especially the old ones.

It would seem, for instance, that under a Temple Empowerment Act, about43,000 temples in Andhra Pradesh have come under Government control and only 18 per cent of the revenue of these temples have been returned for temple purposes, theremaining 82 per cent being used for purposes unstated.

Apparently even the world famous Tirumala Tirupati Temple has not been spared. According to Knapp, the temple collects over Rs 3,100 crores every year and the State Government has not denied the charge that as much as 85 per cent of this is transferred to the State Exchequer, much of which goes to causes that are not connected with the Hindu community. Another charge that has been made is that the Andhra Government has also allowed the demolition of at least ten temples for the construction of a golf course.

Imagine the outcry writes Knapp, if ten mosques had been demolished.

It would seem that in Karanataka, Rs. 79 crores were collected from about two lakh temples and from that, temples received Rs seven crores for their maintenance, Muslim madrassahs and Haj subsidy were given Rs 59 crore and churches about Rs 13 crore.

Because of this, Knapp writes, 25 per cent of the two lakh temples or about 50,000 temples in Karnataka will be closed down for lack of resources, and he adds: The only way the government can continue to do this is with the indifference and tolerance of the Hindus.

Knapp then refers to Kerala where, he says, funds from the Guruvayur Temple are diverted to other government projects denying improvement to 45 Hindu temples. Land belonging to the Ayyappa Temple, apparently has been grabbed and Church encroaches are occupying huge areas of forest land, running into thousands of acres, near Sabarimala.

A charge is made that the previous Communist state government of Kerala. wants to pass an Ordinance to disband the Travancore & Cochin Autonomous Devaswom Boards (TCDBs) and take over their limited independent authority of 1,800 Hindu temples. If what the author says is true, even the Maharashtra Government wants to take over some 450,000 temples in the state which would supply a huge amount of revenue to correct the states bankrupt conditions

And to top it all, Knapp says that in Orissa, the state government intends to sell over 70,000 acres of endowment lands from the Jagannath Temple, the proceeds of which would solve a huge financial crunch brought about by its own mismanagement of temple assets.

Says Knapp: Why such occurrences are so often not known is that the Indian media, especially the English television and press, are often anti-Hindu in their approach, and thus not inclined to give much coverage, and certainly no sympathy, for anything that may affect the Hindu community.

Therefore, such government actions that play against the Hindu community go on without much or any attention attracted to them.

Knapp obviously is on record.

If the facts produced by him are incorrect, it is up to the government to say so.

It is quite possible that some individuals might have set up temples to deal with lucrative earnings. But that, surely, is none of the governments business?

Instead of taking over all earnings, the government surely can appoint committees to make the temples accountable especially for the funds – received and earned- so that the amount discovered is fairly used for temple purposes only.

Says Knapp: Nowhere in the free, democratic world are the religious institutions managed, maligned and controlled by the government, thus denying the religious freedom of the people of the country.

But it is happening in India. Government officials have taken control of Hindu temples because they smell money in them, they recognise the indifference of Hindus, they are aware of the unlimited patience and tolerance of Hindus; they also know that it is not in the blood of Hindus to go to the streets to demonstrate, destroy property, threaten, loot, harm and kill.

Many Hindus are sitting and watching the demise of their culture.

They need to express their views loud and clear. Knapp obviously does not know that should they do so, they would be damned as communalists.

But it is time some one asked the Government to lay down all the facts on the table so that the public would know what is happening behind its back.

Robbing Peter to pay Paul is not secularism. And temples are not for looting, under any name.

Once again ‘India as a Civilization’ under attack – This time by ‘American Orientalists’

By: Shreepal Singh and Ashutosh Agarwal
India is an ancient nation. India has an ancient culture. India has existed not much as a nation but as a civilization since time immemorial.
The essence of this civilization is comprised in its depth of understanding of the eternal questions that have bothered humanity since the beginning of their history, its universality, its endeavor towards a sublime – almost mystical to human mind – destination and its emphatic rejection of any and every narrow approach of a straitjacked-formula in dealing with these issues.
This Indian civilization has seen many assaults on its body and spirit in the past. In all such attacks, the vitality of this civilization has not only withstood the challenge successfully but has absorbed these foreign elements as its own by assigning them a proper place in its cosmos.
It is only for this reason alone that today in India Hindus, Muslims, Christians, Buddhists, Jains, Zoroastrians and many more are living peacefully and in harmony with each other. These diverse people and their diverse faiths are living here in India in more pristine manner than in some of those countries where these faiths form the national majority.
This India is a mini-world; this India is a crucible of mankind; this India is a miracle of humanity. And, for all this the credit goes to Indian civilization.
India as a civilization is under attack once again. And this time the attack comes from the ‘American Orientalism’.
What is the modus operandi – the methodology – adopted by the American Orientalists in assaulting Indian civilization? Let us understand the strategy of this attack. We can divide this modus operandi under two heads: 1. The Tactics (with our suggestions to counter this tactics); and 2. The Strategy (with our suggestions to counter this strategy):
The Tactics:
  1. American Orientalists are highly educated scholars. American Orientalists have done extensive Purva Paksha of the Indian- Thought, while Indians haven’t done Purva Paksha of the Western Thought.
  2. American Orientalists employ Indian-Sepoys to do their biddings and carry forward this war on their behalf.  Examples of Indian-Sepoys recruited by these American Orientalists – or the Invaders of the Sacred – include people like Ananya Vajpayee. These Sepoys are trained by American Orientalists and work – and paid – in various Universities and academia – Social Science,  Anthropology departments etc.
  3. India is the biggest consumer of Western Siddhantas (i.e. social theories). China / Japan / Islamic world have their own Siddhanta, India doesn’t have. Instead, India relies on the Western thought.
  4. India supplies so many sepoys due to mental slavery. Britishers fought 111 wars in India using Indian sepoys while they couldn’t raise even a single regiment in China.
  5. There are plenty of Orthodox Hindus who are well versed in Indian thought but they lack Purva Paksha – they do not know anything about the Western Thought. Most of them are well-intentioned but some are bought over by American Orientalists. Many orthodox Hindus ask typical questions like “Why is Rajiv doing it”, “Who is he”, “Why we need to worry about Westerners.”
  6. There are many Peetham (i.e. Hindu organizations or institutions) like AOL, Acharya Dharma Sabha etc. and some of them are supporting the Rajiv’s work while some are not. Many a time, these Western Indologists use ‘Hindu’ leaders to attack Rajiv Malhotra and all those Indologists who try to carry forward the Indian civilization and try to expose the malicious attacks of these Westerners.
  7. In India there is a phenomenon, which may be called”Murthy Syndrome” (NRN Murthy is picked up only as an example and it is not a personal attack on him). Murty is a clean, honest businessman. But he is funding in domain (i.e. Sheldon Pollock for Sanskrit Studies) outside his expertise and he is avoiding getting into the details.  This is a very risky and foolish proposition because his funds end up supporting work that’s inimical to Dharma.
The Strategy:

1. ‘Secularization’ – The objective is the removal of Shraddha / Sacredness from the study of sacred books and the language in which they are written. This takes the life away from Sanskrit. It’s like converting a Murthi into merely an idol /stone or converting Temple into mere architectural building.

2. American Orientalists seeks to secularize Sanskrit. This is the first one out of many other ways to attack Sanskrit. The second one is: calling Sanskrit as the dead (or Classical) language. The third one is: calling Sanskrit as a socially oppressive literary tool that had/has ensured the glorification of the ‘High and Up’ classes as against the common people. This oppressiveness of Sanskrit language is explained away by American Orientalists like Sheldon Pollock etc. by applying a Western philosophical theory called ‘Estheticization’ propounded by Vico, a native of Italy. The fourth one is: positioning of Sanskrit against other Vernacular Indian languages etc.

3. Under this strategical assault, India suffers from ‘Wonder Solider Syndrome of Hindus’.  No army in the world leaves behind a wounded soldier in the war. If they do, they’ll never win as the morale of the remaining soldiers will be badly hit. But Hindus abandon their fellow Hindus under attack. When Rajiv Malhotra was attacked last year by the Western cabals, most of the prominent Hindu leaders/intellectuals/spiritual organizations heads refused to support him publicly, though many of them had benefited from Rajiv’s work. Fortunately, a handful of Hindu intellectuals supported him and this resulted in his victory. These American Orientalists launched a campaign against Rajiv Malhotra accusing him of plagiarism from these Western writers. They wrote to prominent American book publishers persuading/requesting them not to publish Rajiv’s forthcoming book; they flooded Twitter with troll slandering Rajiv. But Rajiv won and his book “The Battle for Sanskrit” is published. The purpose of this attack was to see that the book of Rajiv is not published. Rajiv specifically mentioned the name of Madhu Kishwar who had supported him.

4. Character Building by Team Sports – Americans teach values by American football. These values are leadership, strategy, Team spirit, coordination, dedication towards goal etc. Hindus totally fail in this respect and they need to learn such team work, strategy and leadership.

5. Ravan comes as Sadhu – Do not be fascinated by the white skin. It means ‘Do not go by nice gestures, nice words, superficial praise of Indian culture by American Orientalists’. Rather go behind their words, look at what they intend to achieve and understand their deeper intellectual positions on Indian civilization, its values and its sacredness. Don’t be in awe of their personality but focus on their work.

6. During Colonial times, Britishers setup 21 colleges in UK to train their officers before sending them to India to rule This is the level of Purva Paksha of Indian-Thought that they have been doing for the last 200 years.

7. Over 5,00,000 original manuscripts of Sanskrit or Indian text lies outside India. Some of it went out during colonial rule, some even after it i.e. during PL480. During PL 480 program, Indian government paid in INR (Indian Rupees) for food grain. The government said that foreigners can buy things that doesn’t devalue Indian Currency. A large portion of this money was used to buy these manuscripts.

And, now a few suggestions to meet the challenge:

1. While engaging with them ‘Do not attack them personally, do not become a rabble-rouser. Learn intellectual issues and counter them calmly, factually and logically’.
2. Do NOT be over-opinionated and under-informed.
3. Give Uttar Paksha ONLY after Purva Paksha.
4. No ego. Do not get offended.
5. No shortcuts but require long Tapasya i.e. years of hard work. No ‘express’ tapasya. No one liners. Complex ideas cannot be expressed in 140 characters.
6. Adhyatmic / meditation / have Shraddha – this allows one to be creative, calm and unperturbed at deeper level.
7. TAPASYA – serious scholarly study of all viewpoints. Examples, every time you read Bhagwat Gita, you get new insight and new learning.
8. Action Oriented – Get into the Kurukshetra – the intellectual war-theator.

Star TV’s “Ramayan” – A mischief

By : Soba Rani (edited)

Star TV in India is planning to show a serial on “Ramayan”.

Its promo creates an impression that a pretention is made that this Ramayan is shown and judged from the angle of Mata Seeta (the wife of Lord Ram), as a woman.

But here a new and modern concept of “women’s rights” is superimposed on a story that belongs to a different era.

Ram’s life story called Ramayana belongs to an era that had different social values and different ideals of society.  These ideals of that society portrayed Seeta as “woman as the wife”; Ram as “a king who cares for the public sentiments”; Ram as  “setting an example of a king (Ram) and a queen (Seeta) who suffer extreme sacrifice and travails of life for others to emulate”.

By logical conclusion (hrough the device of bringing in the modern concepts of  Women’s rights and liberation)  the debauchery is sought to be included in this version of Ramayan.

It is all done in the name of appealimg terms called “Women’s Rights” and “Women’s Liberation”.

The first objection  to this malicious distortion of Ramayana would be: How come the writer/producer of this serial has tried to apply modern ideals to a story that is set in ancient times and different ideals.

The second objection to this distortion would be: How come the writer/producer of this serial has failed to know and show in his story that Seeta by willingly accepting – though grudgingly to show her sufferings –  had set an example of not only a devoted wife but also a righteous queen;  that Ram by sending his wife away from him and not enjoying other women in the meantime in the absence of Seeta (which conduct would be acceptable and even laudable to this modern producer/champion of Women’s rights), Ram had set an example of a virtuous king who simply preferred to suffer personally for the sake of the sentiment of one of his most low subject.

This serial is full of lies, distortions and mockery of Ramayanam.

This serial is broadcast by star TV, which is also translated into Telugu, Tamil languages also.

Also this serial is portray Rakshaks like tribes and they are fighting for their rights.

This slanting of the story by indicating Rakskas as tribal people exposes the nefarious motives of the producer that he wants to promote the current theme of “tribal versus general Indians” propagated by anti-national elements today.

The sad thing is that this serial has got so much of support from so many orators and spiritual gurus like Giar swamy, garikipati narasimharao garu, chaganti koteswararao garu etc.,   really all of them are very good gurus and very much following is there for their speeches.

Here what we believe is that these Gurus have not done “Purvapaksha (or what is that which the opponent wants to convey and wants to achieve)”as Rajiv Malhotra has pointed out.

Now it’s time to all Indians to unite together and protest against this serial so that the so called liberal values full of debauchery  don’t enter into our great ancient Indian narrations.

“Make in India & Start-Ups” – Principles to be kept in mind

By : Shreepal Singh

In the context of “Make in India” and the “Start-up Movement”, we feel that while the need of the hour for India is to accord the top priority to these programs,  there are certain principles to be kept in mind by the government of Shri Naendra Modi when implementing them. It is so particularly in the field of inviting and investing FOREIGN direct investment.

The top priority for India should be – and in fact is – the fast development of this country. Towards this end, Shri Modi has given a slogan (addressing to international investors): “Come to India: Make in India”. Obviously, this is the only way for India – that is backward in most of the science and technological fields – to make the fast pace development.

But such an open invitation needs to be calibrated by the application of intelligent considerations.

The invitation to all and sundry  to come to India and to “make in India” whatever they want is a sure path to India’s ruin. This invitation should be graded in priority categories. These priority categories should be embedded in its policy, which should give preference to some categories over some other categories.

The principle to be followed in inviting foreign investment should be: “Investment is invited only because we do not have access to cutting-edge technology in our efforts to develop.”

The cutting-edge technology manufacturing industries (like Artificial Intelligence, Robotics, Genetic Engineering, Space science industries etc.) should be given top preference by giving the foreign investors all tax exemptions, easy land acquisitions, easy governmental regulation regime etc.

Routine type of industries having old common place technologies should be welcome subject to all strict regulations, particularly forcing them to adhere to the welfare measures of the labor force.

All such industries that do not employ any new technology (like banking, insurance, brand marketing, junk food industries, petty service industries etc.) should be discouraged by imposing on them disincentives in taxes, land provision and stiff regulations. Here all guarantees of employment security,  their welfare and minimum wage regulations should be scrupulously enforced.

All these preferences or disincentives should be inbuilt in the concerned legislation (like land acquisition law, income tax, labor laws etc.).

Wisdom of the Modi government in opening up the manufacturing sector of Indian economy should be tempered with the “wisdom to discriminate” where it is required.

Paradise on Earth – Will the “Dream” be ever realized?

By: Shreepal Singh

Nature, living and non-living both, is full of conflicts. It is the way of existence.

In the living world we have some proof of this operating principle in the Darwin’s theory of evolution. It holds that there is struggle among all living beings for survival and that the fittest one among them survives the struggle. This top rank of fitness is not restricted to physical fitness alone; with differing stages of evolution of a particular species of life this fitness may take different types and tactics.

In human society we have seen during different stages of social development different kinds of conflicts among members of the society. Over the period of its evolution, human society has evolved many kinds of institutions. There are many religions, ethnic stocks, castes and nationalities in the world. There are many kinds of wealth, which individuals possess, and different classes demarcated by the possession or non-possession of this wealth. There have been slaves and slave-owners, peasants and land-owners and working-people without capital and employers of these people having capital to hire them.

It all seems natural since no two individuals are equal in strength, brain, money or circumstances.

Because of the conflict of interests among different people and these inequalities among them, there is exploitation of the weak and injustice to the disadvantaged. It is natural mechanism of this world’s forward movement. It is the way of human development.

But there is another aspect of life’s evolution.

There is an internal – a psychic – evolution of life spread over many births of the individual concerned. It is wrong to assume that all weak or economically disadvantaged individuals are always an exploited lot on whom injustice has been inflicted by the strong; and, likewise, it is also wrong to hold that all strong persons with advantageous circumstances are unjust out to exploit the weaklings.

Psychic or internal evolution of human beings – and even of animals also, with which we are not concerned here – offers a logical explanation of the cases where the strong persons with fortuitous circumstances have opposed the exploitation and unjust treatment of the weak.

Since past ages, human history has seen many philosophers and thinkers who dreamt of establishing a just social order; some ordained religious prescriptions to help and protect the weak. However, so far all have failed in establishing a paradise on earth. Why is it so?

Human is imperfect being within and therefore his society, which is the outside manifestation of this inner being, is cruel, exploitative and unjust. All our social philosophies, ideologies or theories that aim at remedying this most ancient anti-social phenomenon, whether they are of pacific or radical nature, make a mistake in searching the culprit in this outside social behavior and in prescribing a change in social system.

This is the chief reason why persons fighting injustice have often become unjust themselves.

It is not that we should not devise a better social system and fight for establishing it; we should do it. But we should be mindful that this change is not enough.

We should go further and devise means to make human beings better within. We should aim at achieving better devices, both within and without. That means, we should fight for a social system where the robbing off the labor of people by the capital is not permitted by society’s economic institutions and people are assured of a congenial atmosphere to lead an awakened life within.

The social institutions – be they economic, political or social – should be ranked in importance only secondary to the primary need – that is, individualized personal life focussed on his or her psychic or spiritual development – to achieve the goal.

These outer formations – socio-economic cum political institutions – should be changed by humanity as early as possible in a way that they do not hinder individuals’ internal – psychic – evolution.

On the contrary, these institutions should be consciously fashioned in a way that they support and advance the individual’s effort to elevate him or her on the psychic scale. These supportive means include guranteed right to work; providing a person with enough leisure hours to enable him or her to live his life; provision of necessities of life; etc. Today, science and technology have made it possible to secure all these requirements, which were not possible a few decades earlier.

An individual should not be permitted to spoil the needed congenial socio-economic ambience that may hinder this individuals’ psychic progress for whatever reason – like the need to offer an individual the incentive to make economic development of the society; or, for the reason of providing him or her the freedom to take initiative; etc.

The society has to make its moves, even if falters, towards perfection. It is the key of moving forward – moving ahead on the path of evolution.

The fact is that perfection in economic justice, like in all other fields of human activities, would never come till human is what he is – till he does not rise further by giving a place of importance to that element what lies beyond his body’s needs, his desires and his mental formations – and that despite knowing this limitation he still has to make his moves towards perfection.

“Akhand Bharat” (a united India): Is it a suicidal-idea for India?

By: Shreepal Singh

Recently there was a debate at the Oxford Union organized by Al Zazeera on India in the context of much publicized alleged intolerance in this country. From India Ram Madhav, General Secretary of Bharatiya Janta Party, was invited to participate in the debate.

Many persons sought to participate in the debate – one among them being Rajiv Malhotra, an articulate Indian based in U. S. – to represent India but their request was turned down by the organizers.

Ram Madhav was ill prepared to face the questions from the organizers, who were hostile and ill-disposed towards India.

The debate was conducted by a belligerent chair (Mehandi Hasan), which bombarded Ram Madhav with questions. The questions seemed difficult but were very simple to answer, had Ram Mahav shown the mirror to the chair on the question of intolerance by quoting the facts what is happening to Yazidis in Syria or to Pandits in Kasmir; or to Hindus in Pakistan or Bangladesh, of course, in addition to the facts of history.

But Ram Madhav fumbled and it seemed that the chair had made the point that India with a Prime Minister in Modi was an intolerant country.

It would have been a minor literary  event but for the reason that Ram Madhav happened to be a leader of BJP, represented India and – in his usual enthusiasm of an ordinary Indian – he proposed the voluntary formation of “Akhand Bharat” ( a united India) comprising of India, Pakistan and Bangladesh.

The idea of an Akhand Bharat is an emotional outburst of many good-intentioned Indians. But this idea is fraught with mortal danger to India, at least till the international circumstances do not radically change religious bigotry in the neighboring countries.

On the idea of “Akhand Bharat”, or a united India, views have been expressed by some persons here:

By: S.

Let us seriously consider the pros cons of reunification of India, Pak and Bangladesh:

Cons

  • In the current global political scenario, neither are the constituents ready, nor will the forces acting on these countries will let this happen.
  • Pak and its entire existence has been one of confused identity. Their very existence is based on either disturbing or propagating the idea of destroying India.
-Both of them have shown a strong resistance to let a pluralistic society exist in their borders, especially Hindus.
-The headache of separatists within these nations only will get strengthened granting easier access to harm other parts of the nation.
-1947 partition riots are a mere small sample  of these motivated forces, let us not forget that there are no strong leaders of the caliber of Gandhi to influence either sides, nor do we have the remembrance of common heritage and cause of fighting the colonial rule.
  • A unified India will be a huge threat to both US and China, not to mention Britain or Russia. None of these elements will even let the seed of the idea to germinate. To top it all, since the idea is only in India, it will be deemed and branded as India’s superpower design.

  • A fractured unity will hurt, unlike German or Vietnam reunification or even that of potential Korean, this reunification does not have roots all over, yet. There is no cultural, religious, social or national commonality and all the perceived ideas are purely one sided romanticized version from some Indian players.

  • Assuming, there is no geopolitical strain, mere economic stress of raising the poverty levels in the larger area will present a huge nightmare. India’s current economy is not yet in its preferred strength like West Germany prior to reunification or that of today’s China to embark on such an adventure.

  • Iran and Afghanistan, perhaps may not view this as danger, but China surely will and given their current reach, it will be hard to expect Pak (even if they are the primary movers of this idea) to not create more confusion. A simple idea of India launching free satellites for SAARC itself is being stalled and pulled down, only by Pak.

Pros

The population of Muslims in Pakistan is around 190 million, around 136 million in Bangladesh and around 172 million in India.

The population of Hindus, Sikhs, Jains and Sikhs put together in these three countries is around 1000 million.

The Muslim population of the Akhand Bharat would be around 33%. This would be suicidal for Hindus and other religions.

Most of the radicalized Muslims are in these neighboring countries and they would be able to move freely in this vast country.

The Muslims are very clear in their thinking with their agenda of conversion:

  1. As a minority, ask for more and more concessions and propagate Islam slowly if situation is conducive. Else, make peace with majority and continue to survive and wait for an opportunity.

  1. As a majority, terminate the minority through conversion or killing.

The 33% Muslim will become a majority in few years, and Hindus and other religions would face serious threat. We have examples of genocides of Hindus in Muslim majority Pakistan, Bangladesh and even Kashmir in our own country.

In fact, even unification of POK into India would be dangerous for us.

The current borders are stopping the radicalized Muslims into country to a large extent and Indians are somewhat safe.

In current scenario, India must think of them staying free nations and as a good neighbor try to maintain peace with them protecting its own interests.

There was a huge mistake, as huge as Gandhi et al did, when Indian leaders allowed separation for an Islamic nation in East and West Pakistan (Pakistan and Bangladesh) but kept India secular. The Hindus lost in that decision. Muslims are far more effective even when in small numbers than Hindus are with their larger numbers. Hindus will become a minority eventually with Islamic aggressiveness.

It is a bad idea to suggest any unification of two diverse ideologies.

If anyone is thinking of a reunification of India with Pakistan and Bangladesh, they need to have their head examined. THE PROBLEM IS RELIGION.

If Pakistan and Bangladesh were Hindu majority, it would have been a different story.

First of all the idea of reunification would be impossible. Do you think radicalized Muslims would submit to such idea without a Hindu massacre?

On second thought, maybe such radicalized Muslims would agree, because it would be an opportunity for them to take over India and turn all Hindus into Muslims.

Any idea of reunification is suicide for the Hindus. It would be like adjoining the termite nest to your house.

The separation of 1947 was a good thing. It would have been great if all Muslims had left India.

  • Such a large-scale and irreversible gamble by any organization/institution would be rash, unless first analyzed carefully. This analysis includes developing all likely scenarios and assigning probabilities for likely outcomes. No corporate entity rushes into such an extreme position based on emotions or political correctness.
  • First you must study the trend in those villages that started out with 40% Muslim, 20% Christian & secular, 40% Hindu. Can someone cite a study of say 50 villages that had large Muslim population living alongside Hindus in the 1950s, and tell us what happened over the subsequent 2 generations? My hunch is that such places did NOT end up as prototypes and microcosms of Akhand Bharat. Rather they drifted more towards Islam, and the Hindu side got diluted and even capitualted in many cases. But I am open to being proven wrong by hard data – not emotional arguments and some silly reasoning of which we have samples here.
  • The numerical quantity of population is not what matters. What matters is the institutional and leadership strength of various contenders. Corporate entity X does not beat Y just because it had more employees. Otherwise there would not have been the rise of Facebook, Google, Amazon, etc in the past generation beating the mighty giants of the past. If 20 jihadis could topple the World Trade Towers, you better wake up and discard the argument based on number of people on each side.
  • You must consider the international support that Islamic groups in Middle East can offer the future South Asian reunified Muslims. Look at their global reach and ambition. Which Hindu groups has anywhere close to that clout, strategic mindset, operational competence, globalized thinking? None even close.
  • If you think such a Hindu globalization can beat global Islam, you have the burden of proof to show this, because you are the one advocating such a sweeping gamble.
  • Grand Narrative to support a global aggressive expansion: Islam’s success is being driven by a powerful grand narrative rooted in 1400 years of field experience winning successfully in every single continent of the world. Where is Hinduism’s GN? How much experience in living memory to implement any expansion successfully? Where are the equivalent Hindu global institutions by comparison? The mere fact that prominent leaders go about making irresponsible policy statements suggests the hollowness of the Hindu institutions.
  • This is not an era of isolated locations that are left alone by global forces. If you understand BI, you cannot be such a fool and analyze only the local forces at work.
  • Even a mediocre middle management level person with decent corporate experience would recommend that first there must be experiments on a limited scale to study the phenomena, before implementing something so radical on a grand scale. Field trails, beta tests, prototypes. Have the proponents of reunification done these to show the results of their experiment? If not, they are a bunch of idiots with dangerous ideas. Why would you roll the dice on 1.5 billion people without having tested the idea on 20 – 50 small scale village level prototypes first?
  •  Digestion of Hinduism into Islam: Have you studied the syndrome of digestion into Islam silently going on? One is the fashionable urdu-ization of pop culture. Second is Sufism as cool, hip and ‘spiritual’. These are the mouths of digestion feeding the stomach.

Bottom line:

Hindus who call for reunification must remove the burqa from their mind and see the light. The above provocations are a starting point of the extensive due process they better carry out before making such irresponsible suggestions, and that too on international TV sitting in front of opposing audiences.

My challenge:

First create a tiny scale Akhand Bharat somewhere in india, say at the level of a state. Show us the metrics to prove its dharmic lifestyles, governance, narratives, etc implemented and living at the level of individual, family, local community, state-wide. This dharmic ethos should pervade and drive media, schools, colleges, government, business, etc. Accomplishing this will take a generation of experimentation at least. It is not about making speeches and slogans. After this success, then expand organically to cover a cluster of states. That will take several more decades. Once at least 50% of all Indians including all faiths and secularists have been brought under this imagined Akhand Bharat of the future, only then can someone open their mouth about exporting this model.

One should be really surprised at the ignorance and naivety of the suggestion of Akhand Bharat. Any Akhand Bharat combining the different countries of the region will be suicidal for Hindus. The partition of Hindus was the greatest parting gift to India by the British.

After centuries of foreign rule Hindus got a free country of their own. Our stupid politicians and of course the so called secularists are trying their best to lose it. All you have to do is read Koran and the Hadiths, and you will know that in Akhand Bharat Hindus will be simply massacred. Besides turning India into a Muslim land, it would be bad for the whole civilization. As things are going Muslims are on the upsurge anyway. It is too bad that Hindus who believe in the supremacy of knowledge have forgotten to read, and in their ignorance have reached total asinine conclusions.

Honestly speaking, no one would like to think of any unification plan with any Muslim country. They will slowly and gradually digest anybody’s culture. You have to be conscious and be alert all the time when you live with Muslims. Muslims say that the Islamic law  is superior to human dignity. All logic reasoning is subdued when a decision is made according to Islamic law.

It was very good that India was divided into two nations for whatever reasons. But this partition did not happen properly as total Muslim population did not go to Pakistan due to idiocy of Gandhi and Nehru. This was one of the biggest mistake committed in Indian history.

Just imagine the condition of Hindus before British came to India. Small number of Muslims had controlled Hindus over such big numbers over vast area with rape, killing, conversion etc. If India was not divided then population would have been around 160crs today.

Out of this, Muslims would have been around 52crs (18.2 Pakistan, 15.8 Bangladesh and Indian 17.2 crores) i.e. around 30%. Just imagine what this population would have done to rest of India. Huge numbers of MPs and MLAs in parliament and assembly who would have changed laws as per sharia and would have made life miserable for Hindus. Rape ,murder, abduction, conversion etc. would have continued unabated as previously before British occupation or may be even with more vigour.

One can anticipate the changes in demography in North America, Europe and Asia as well. Lot of articles have appeared recently in social media etc. denoting major population would be Muslim in these part of the world in coming 30-40 years.

Only tubular-vision persons will now talk about unified India.

Have you read the history text books of Pakistan from 6th to 10th grade? I did. They are cringe worthy. Re-unification is plain suicide for Hindus. All we need to do is make sure plague rats from that sinking ship do not infest what we have left.
