Politics! What is politics?

Yes, politics. Politics is all about governance. In democracy, it is about self-governance. This governance, or self-governance in democracy, amounts to exercising sovereign powers. This power is derived from people. This exercising of sovereign power is for the welfare of people and power carries with it the concomitant responsibilities.

How politics is related to democracy?

In democracy politics is all about self-governance of people geared to their progress and development. It does not mean the governance of people by a professional class of politicians. In today’s democracy, the professional class of politicians is more committed to perpetuating their own enjoyment of benefits of the socio-economic status quo than the welfare of people. This commitment of professional politicians to their own benefits results in condemning the ordinary people to suffer pains indefinitely.

What is the role of political parties in democracy?

In vibrant democracy political parties have a great role to play. A political party is supposed to have certain ideals and goals to achieve in the collective life of society. They are supposed to have their ideology or philosophy meant to educate people and guide society towards some ideals propounded by their ideology or philosophy.

What is public ‘welfare’, ‘progress’ and ‘development’?

Public welfare lies in their progress and development. Public’s progress and development is an objective and measurable thing. It is reflected in their level of living standards. But the term “progress and development” has different meanings to different people. In human society naturally all persons are not alike. Some are bestowed with capabilities and power, while some are disadvantaged in these respects. To the capable-lot, the meaning of progress and development is to further enhancing their advantages. To the disadvantaged-lot, it means to somehow acquire for them the present advantages available to the other lot. This is a contradictory situation. But there is a synthetic view of progress and development also, according to which progress and development of public is the just sharing of the available resources/advantages among different sections of the society and further multiplying them for sharing them alike for their ‘common’ progress and development.

What is ‘just sharing’ of resources among persons who are not ‘alike’?

Humans have evolved out of animal conditions. They are still undergoing evolution. In this evolutionary process, the victory of humans over Nature produces beneficial fruits in the form of commodities, the distribution of which fruits among public is called their progress and development. This victory of humans over Nature is achieved by their joint/collective, or common, efforts. In view of this fact, it is ‘just’ to commonly share the available resources and enhance them further in the like manner. In the process of their struggle to get victory over Nature, humans’ collective efforts and just sharing of fruits would not only bring them peace and well-being but would also quicken their evolutionary pace further, which is called their progress and development.

What about freedom and liberty of people?

Freedom and liberty are some of those traits that make humans different from animals. This freedom should be unlimited. This liberty should be unlimited; unlimited to the extent that it does not impinge on the freedom and liberty of others. My freedom and liberty should run unchecked, till they meet on the way with your freedom and liberty. But, human relations in an organized collective life are not so simple to define. Firstly, the area where my freedom and liberty meet with your similar rights is an arena of ever shifting lines. For example, my freedom grants me the right to install an industry, which would spew harmful gases into atmosphere; your freedom grants you the right to breathe good quality fresh air. This is an area of eternal conflict, which cannot be resolved; it can only be postponed by arriving at periodical compromises between the two conflicting rights. Secondly, this right to freedom and liberty should not be on paper only. This right should be real, that is, it should be capable of being put into exercise. Any compulsion, whether by direct or indirect means, on this right is its infringement. We only take into account the direct way of compulsion on our rights of freedom and liberty and prohibit by law these compulsions. But we also need to take into account the indirect way of compelling ordinary people’s rights of freedom and liberty. If you have the freedom to move around any place but do not have the necessary means, and that is money, this freedom is simply on a piece of paper without any worth for the person concerned. An economic system that results in such helplessness of any person – when all around him there is plenty of wealth available – needs to be rectified. A democracy that keeps such an important right on paper only needs to be improved. We stand for the real rights of freedom and liberty, which are capable of being exercised by everybody.

Good or bad – which ones do you categorize Indian political parties?

It is the individuals, and not the political parties to which they belong, that matters. There are good – very good – individuals in all political parties in India. And, there are bad persons also in every one of them. It is the intention of an individual that determines his worth. Why is he or she there in politics? What for? Choice of this or that party by him or her is immaterial. Political parties are public platforms that offer only an opportunity to individuals to further their intentions, good or bad.

What is your ideology or philosophy?

The ideology or philosophy of IPC is to serve the human evolutionary cause. Since human society is an organized structure of a host of institutions, including politics and governments, this cause is served by providing to humans better economic, political, social and cultural conditions, which are congenial to smooth and unobstructed human evolution. This ideology in pursuing this cause does not make any distinction of nation, race, religion or ideology.

How does this ideology differ from other mainstream political parties?

In contradistinction to other mainstream political parties, IPC does not hold any political system, be it capitalism, democracy or socialism, as an ideal. This ideology emphasizes the need to effect a change in social institutions, again and again, in the light of newly acquired experience and innovations and to bring a change in the matter of distribution of wealth. Effecting such unceasing changes in the patterns of distribution of wealth and in the old and redundant social institutions is necessary for the spiritual betterment of humanity.

How will you compete with other powerful mainstream political parties, which have mountain of money?

It has never been possible for anyone to compete in politics without possessing a huge amount of money but now there is a glimmer of hope to play a role in politics without possessing money power. This is made possible by the advent of information technology. This technology has come as a boon in the hands of ordinary people. With the advances constantly being made in this technology, it is becoming more and more easy and viable alternative to replace money power.

Indian People’s Congress seeks to tap this unparalleled power of information technology. In its work and mission, it exclusively depends on this power of information technology to reach to the public at large.

And, to achieve this avowed aim, Indian People’s Congress is not much concerned with the business of representing others, that is, people. It is more concerned with educating the people so that the change in their mindset is reflected in politics too. In addition, in pursuing its objective, IPC follows the policy of cooperation with all political, social, economic and cultural forces that are advancing this cause, whether within India or outside India.

How do you see the prospects of success in your mission?

India is an ancient nation. It has a long – very long – history. Things always go on changing and the history is continuously made. But, there is always the spirit of ‘Time’ behind every such change. It is not the entities – the events, the personalities – that are apparent to everybody who alone are there to play their role in this change. There are also forces behind them that are subtle, not apparent. These forces are more powerful than the apparent entities; the entities – personalities – are these forces’ creation, their instruments. These subtle forces operate in tune with the spirit of Time at the given moment through the apparent personalities, big and small both.

Humanity is undergoing unprecedented turmoil. Social relations among individuals and throughout the world are tattered; humans are mentally stressed and tormented. In fact, a wholesale worldwide spiritual revolution is brewing. It is in the offing and may burst any time soon – not in centuries but in decades. The retaliation of this spirit of Time is overdue. For this impending need, the suitable entities – the personalities, the parties, the events – are bound to be created in due times. There is no doubt about it. It is a matter of time only. This is the lesson of history.

The only relevant question here is: who are willing to act in tune with the spirit of Time? Who are willing to be the instruments of these forces of change? Here big or small is irrelevant.

What is your message to people?

World awaits India’s rise as a power so that she could provide the much needed spiritual guidance to humanity today for a better tomorrow – a better tomorrow that is born out of the wisdom of immortal truth. But India is under invasion today – invasion by some from within and invasion by some from without; invasion of her spirit and of her body politic. Time to act jointly is now. Time to save India – and usher her as a colossal spiritual power in 21st century – is now.
